These embroideries are visual puzzles. To prepare, first I paint the silk. Next, I sew a grid with my sewing machine using my sewing foot as a ruler/guide. I add random diagonal lines which divide some of the units. Then I begin to stitch. I choose my embroidery thread without a color plan, and, using satin stitch, begin to fill in units. When I reach a diagonal, I change direction of the color. Colors begin to intersect and depth occurs as they weave over and under each other. The process is meditative yet artistically athletic.
